What is Free Comic Book Day?

What is Free Comic Book Day?

"Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores."

Each year, COMIC WORLD in Largo, Florida is one of the thousands of comic book stores worldwide hosting FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. At Comic World, we love to GIVE THE GIFT OF READING by sharing our love of comic books with everyone, and Free Comic Book Day is the perfect opportunity to reach out again and again to our community, to bring people together for a common cause -- the love of reading, and the love of comics as an artform -- so that interest in the genre is always growing.

Comic books have long been a means for young people to take their first steps toward becoming true readers. With the help of the sequential storytelling approach that comic book art offers, along with a unique narrative style, comic books can aid teachers and educators by helping young people gain a greater interest in reading, by expanding their vocabulary, and by introducing new and exciting ideas to their fertile imaginations.

This year, for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2014, Comic World will be once again hosting this wonderful, worldwide event by offering hundreds of titles to readers of all ages. In addition to the free comic books, we will be having a storewide sale on newly-released comic books, standard back issues, "Goody Bin" back issues -- which are more collectible and rare -- as well as collected editions of comic books in Graphic Novel form, both in hardcover and softcover. We will ALSO have a 10 for $1.00 Discount Comic Book area, Exclusive Mystery Boxes which contain 300 comic books with No Duplicates for only $30.00, plus discounts on toys and other items throughout the store!

One of the great attractions for, young people especially, comes when they have a chance to meet their heroes! This year, Comic World welcomes THE MIGHTY THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA to the store to meet and greet folks of all ages! They will be happy to pose for pictures with you!

Where would comic books be without the incredible artwork that graces its pages? Well, ARTISTS such as NIGEL WILLIAMS of ARTF1RST make comic books, and events like FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, come alive! We're pleased to announce that Nigel will be joining us exclusively from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM for Free Comic Book Day, doing sketches and caricatures of comic book fans of all ages!

We also welcome MJOLNIR HAMMERS again this year to our FCBD event! Expert craftsman, Douglas Moody, has created some beautiful replicas of MJOLNIR, the Uru hammer of THOR, as well as some authentic Norse shields and other Norse items!  Plus, this year, Mjolnir Hammers is carrying the Official Pendants of the Marvel and DC universes, featuring the logos of your favorite comic book characters! Spider-Man, Agents of SHIELD, Batman, Superman, Flash, and many others including a small replica of Mjolnir itself! Come by and take a look at these fantastic items for yourself!

We look forward to seeing you all come out for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, SATURDAY, MAY 3rd, 2014 from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM at COMIC WORLD: 1901 WEST BAY DRIVE, SUITE 9, LARGO, FL 33770. Feel free to call 727-656-5000 for more information!!

"A GOOD MORNING" - An Easter Story

HAPPY EASTER!!

A TRADITION OF MINE THE PAST FEW YEARS IS TO SHARE A STORY I WROTE SOME TIME AGO CALLED, "A GOOD MORNING".  IT IS THE STORY OF THE FIRST EASTER AS TOLD FROM A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE.  PLEASE ENJOY IT, AND HAVE A HAPPY EASTER AND BLESSED YEAR TO COME!

The light consumed everything.  It was brilliant.  It overpowered one's senses.  Then, slowly, it faded until all was dark once more.  It was still cool, early in the morning.  The sun had not yet risen.

His eyelashes grazed the linen.  "I was somewhere else...."  He pulled the small cloth away, taking a deep breath before rolling the cloth into a ball, setting it to one side. The air was stale and unpleasant.  Musty.  It was all coming back now.  He had been high above the crowd, looking down through blinding, horrible pain.  Sweat mixed with blood poured onto the ground, staining the sand and rock below.  Some people looked up, shook their fists and said terrible things. His tormentors laughed along with them.  His mother stood nearby with several others, weeping. Helpless.  Some spoke kindly, others threw rocks.  He looked to the sky eventually, past the darkening clouds that gathered, crying out to the Father.  He was filled with thirst, waiting for the rain.  He didn't remember the rain, however.  He had left this body by then.

He was elsewhere for a time... how long had it been?  Only three days?  It seemed like an eternity. "I'm back in the body now."  His hands lightly ran over the wrists and assorted puncture wounds, touching the dry, matted flesh that had been ripped away from this body by the soldiers and their lashes.  He'd been taken after the body had grown cold and stiff, and had been placed here before the corpse could be properly prepared for burial.  His palms touched the rough, hewn surface upon which the body lay.  Not much room here at all.  Small.  He wouldn't be able to stand yet.

He slid slowly into a seated position.  They would be coming here soon.  Today.

He had much to do.

He was thankful there was no pain.  The burial cloth fell away, coming to rest in another part of the enclosure.  He could heal the wounds, of course, but they too would soon serve a purpose, and so they remained.

His attention turned to the raised voices outside.  Soldiers, no doubt guarding the entrance. Then, just as suddenly as they had begun, the voices stopped.  All was quiet once again.

He wouldn't require this body for long.  He knew there would be those who doubted, though, who lacked the ability to understand that the prophecy had to be fulfilled. Some simply lacked the faith to believe unless they could see for themselves.

Stone scraped against stone.  Dawn broke into the tomb.

"Master," spoke one of the two who served Him.

They bore garments to dress Him in for the days that were to come.

Lowering His head, He emerged through the opening, looking out over the land before smiling His same, familiar smile.

"Let us begin."

The Honeymooners on Krypton

I saw this picture on Facebook of a statue portraying baby Kal-El, who would one day grow up to be Superman, strapped inside his rocket as his Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara said their farewells.

I thought, this is very cool! At first, I thought it was a painting, but reading about it, the article said it was a statue that came out some years ago.

THEN I thought...  imagine if Jor-El was Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) aka "Ralph-El", and Lara was Alice aka "Laralice" (Audrey Meadows). Throw in a little Ed Norton (Art Carney) as   "Nor-Ton" and we've got what I loving call

--  "The Honeymooners on Krypton"!!

Let's peek in on the harried couple on the day of Krypton's alleged doom....

The scene opens with a familiar face beaming down on Krypton from its golden moon. As we zoom down through the planet's clouds, we approach a Kryptonian city. Moving ever closer, we spy an old apartment building. There, in the kitchen window, we see the nose cone of a small rocket aimed toward the sky. Inside, Ralph-El and his wizened beyond her years wife, Laralice, have just strapped their infant son, Kal-El into the baby seat within the rocket, sealing the hatch. They are clearly upset.

"BANG ZOOM!" Ralph-El would say.

Just then, Nor-Ton would zip in the door. "Hey there, Ralphie boy! Whatcha got there?"

"Not now, Nor-Ton, we're s
ending little Kal to Earth!"

Pushing his hat back, Nor-Ton blinks. "Why are you gonna do that, if I might ask?"

"Oh RALPH!" Laralice cries. "My BABY!"

"Because, pal o'mine, the planet's about to EXPLODE into a billion pieces!!"

"A billion pieces? Well, gee Ralph, I don't know why you're, why you're thinking something like that."

"Somethin' like that? Somethin' like THAT?" Ralph-El begins pacing the room. "Nor-Ton, haven't you felt the GROUND shakin'? Haven't you seen the PLUMES of FIRE shootin' up inta that air? 'Somethin' like THAT'? We're all dead men, Nor-Ton. D-E-D, DEAD! Well little KAL ain't gonna wind up like the rest of us, no sir!"

"No, Nor-Ton," Laralice interjects, "We feel that Kal would be better off on the Earth, where he can..." Laralice begins to weep, "Where he can grow up with other boys... (sob) and have a loving family again!" Laralice wipes her eyes with her apron.

"On Earth, he'll be a big man, Nor-Ton! BIG! BIGGER THAN ME, even!"

"Uhhh, gee Ralph, that's pretty big," Nor-Ton points at the larger man's girth. "There's almost nobody on alla East 53rd Street and New Krypton Avenue that's as big as you! Hee hee hee..."

Ralph-El starts waving his arms at Nor-Ton, screaming, "WILL YOU GET OUTTA HERE!!"

"Sheesh," Nor-Ton says, "What a grouch!!"

Ralph-El and Laralice walk over to the rocket once more, looking inside at the sleeping tyke, and hug one another as Ralph-El pushes the launch button to send the child skyward.

"Anyway, I don't know what you're so upset about, Ralph!" Nor-Ton shrugs. "There's no calamity coming! Krypton's not blowing up!"

Laralice glances back, wiping away her tears. "Why do you say THAT, Nor-Ton?"

"Well, that's not the ground that's been shakin', Laralice. That's what I've been tryin' ta tell you. That's just the SEWER backing up into the Science Council's Chambers again, just like LAST YEAR, when Ralph ate all of those Hantha sprouts and used their facilities!"

"WHAT?" Laralice gasps. "Oh Ralph, STOP THE COUNTDOWN!!"

"Homina-homina.... I -- I CAN'T, Laralice, I don't know how ta work this thing!!"

"OH RALPH!!"

Steam erupts from the vessel's port vents as it prepares to launch.

"Oh RALPH, DO SOMETHING!!"

"Wh-wh- wait-a-minute!! What about the plumes a'fire? The flames?"

Nor-Ton chuckles, "Oh, that's just HOT GAS igniting, Ralph!! You know all ABOUT hot gas escapin', right Laralice? Hee hee hee."

Ralph-El hollers louder, "WILL YOU STOP MAKING WITH THE WISECRACKS!?"

Pulling at the rocket door, Ralph-El tries to free the baby, burning his hand instead. "AAHHHHH!!!" Walking around the room, holding his wrist, he bellows again, "AAHHHHH!!!"

Just then, the room goes dark. The rocket launcher goes dead, and the launch is stopped.

"Oh, quick Nor-Ton, help me get him out of there before the power comes back on!!"

Jamming a kitchen knife into the seal, the duo pop the hatch, freeing the baby once more as Ralph-El sheepishly looks at his wife, son and best friend.

"Gee, Laralice, I really blew it, didn't I? I'm sorry. I almost sent our little baby boy inta outer space and got him adopted by aliens we don't even know, all because I was scared and jumped to all the wrong conclusions."

"Ralph," Laralice smiles, "Everything's all right."

"Yeah," Nor-Ton says, "Good thing the power went out when it did!"

Laughing, Laralice pulls an envelope out of her apron. "I guess this is why."

Ralph looks at the envelope a moment, then at her, confused.

"I guess in all the excitement, I forgot to pay the electric bill this month!!" she laughs.

Putting his arms around his wife, Ralph-El smiles, "Baby, you're the greatest!!"

As the happy couple embrace in a kiss, we *fade to black* as Nor-Ton is heard to utter, "Va-va-va-VOOM!!"

Among the highlights of the run of recent Superman comics are several issues featuring the "Sandman Superman" story arc which began in issue #233, which we have yet to purchase. However, we have issues #234 - #238, (#239 was a reprint issue), #240 and #241. We're also hoping to acquire #242, which concluded the "Sandman Superman" arc.

How did that story begin?

It began with Superman racing to the aid of a group of scientists determined to create a powerful new reactor that operates using Kryptonite, and ends with the irradiated sand forming into a new lifeform to beguile our favorite Man of Tomorrow!!

Written by Denny O'Neil, and illustrated by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson, those issues are considered to be among the finest issues in DC Comics, which came about in 1971 at a time when Jack Kirby was joining DC where he would bring Jimmy Olsen into the 1970's, creating DARKSEID, the NEW GODS, Intergang and so much more along the way. Each of the Superman titles were greatly affected with continuing themes, such as the evil Morgan Edge, a clone of the real Edge, who was being held captive as seen in Lois Lane's comic. This was only part of the fun fans had with DC back in the beginning of the '70's, which spread outward to the BATMAN titles, with GREEN LANTERN becoming GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW and winning awards as it touched on subjects of old age, overpopulation, environment, corrupt landlords, politicians and corporations, and of course racism.

For your enjoyment, here's the last page of Superman #233, which led directly into the Superman "Sandman" storyline, most of which we have in stock today!!
