21st Century Comic World: LET'S BEGIN WITH -- "FUTURE'S END" WEEK I : DC COMICS!! September 3rd, 2014

WELCOME BACK!!

After a long, hot summer, the 21st Century Comic World Man returns -- where we left off, apparently -- as WEEK ONE of the NEW 52 FUTURE'S END EVENT kicks off, with these new lenticular covers.

That said, the flashing pictures that DC released aren't anything like what you'll actually see. Not having read one issue yet -- and I'm sure they'll be very enjoyable, since Future's End has been one of the best books DC has put out since the New 52 launched in 2011 -- my feelings toward the 3D covers themselves are, they are just about exactly what they offered last year in terms of quality and consistency. Not to say they're bad, but the promo images suggested strongly that they were more like a GIF image, and I had even seen the word GIF associated with them. However, they are NOT gif images. They are 3D covers, however, and they are lenticular, meaning that when you move them, they change the picture slightly. Overall, I'm disappointed that DC went to the trouble to release the images as you see posted here and not make that happen.

I'm of a mind to say that, I don't care to see DC Comics do covers like this for an event month anymore. I enjoyed Zero Month much more, with one version of the cover at one price, rather than a 3D and a 2D standard cover, which had us ordering quantities of each. With the allocations from 2013, we also didn't know if we could trust DC at their word that, by ordering in May 2014 for September, we'd get all our copies. Remember, in 2013 there were severe allocations of the 3D comics. Now we know that DC Comics DID follow through with their promise. No allocations. So that's a good thing, and we're happy about that.

This means that we do indeed have both covers in stock for Week One, and will have pull service and shelf copies out for sale at Noon Wednesday.

FUTURE'S END has been repeatedly a good, solid weekly book. I truly believe that 90% of the one-shots will be good, solid books. There's a chance I'll even enjoy all of them.

EARTH 2: WORLD'S END is a weekly series set to premiere in October, and will dovetail into the Future's End weekly series. Both series will continue through March 2015, and then cease. Speculation is high that DC Comics is planning a CRISIS Anniversary Event.

Reasons for speculation come from the two weekly series tying in together, the mention of an 'Earth 2 War' at some point in the future of the New 52 Earth (Earth-0), the appearance of the Anti-Monitor on the last page of Forever Evil #7, and the publication of Grant Morrison's long-awaited MULTIVERSITY series (issue #1 is out NOW).

Having read Multiversity, I foresee an exploration of the New 52 Multiverse, fully aware that out there, the Anti-Monitor is building strength to go to war with Darkseid. Meanwhile, we know that Darkseid, Desaad, and other minions of Darkseid have been invading and waging war on other Earths in the multiverse (Earth-0, Earth-2), and that the story is building.

In this, DC has something good. True, a lot of the books in the New 52 floundered. many titles were ill-prepared. It seemed that many creators were filling space, putting a monthly book out until the true chess piece was ready to deploy. While Green Lantern and Batman carried forward as before, though the fans were poking holes in the continuity problems, they were still solid books for some time, acting as foundation-builders for the New 52.

[By 'continuity problems', I mean: Batman's age in relation to Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Damien all being Robin; Batman's alleged death at the hands of Darkseid in Final Crisis, because if FC didn't happen, then why was Dick Grayson 'Batman'?; Blackest Night featured an older JSA, Martha Kent, a zombie-fied Earth 2 Superman and Lois Lane and other people that do not exist in the New 52 or are not on Earth-0 at all, so how exactly *did* Blackest Night really unfold? For that matter, how did Brightest Day take place in the New 52? And they're not the only books with continuity glitches: Did Superman die at the hands/claws of Doomsday? If so, how did he come back if there weren't the four Supermen as in Reign of the Supermen? Was Doomsday put in the Phantom Zone afterwards? If so, was he alive or was it his corpse that then came back to life? Inquiring minds want to know!]

But DC is in full stride now. Earth-0 is allegedly going to go to war with Earth-2. Darkseid is going to go to war with the Anti-Monitor. We're exploring the DC Multiverse as not seen in years. Fun times ahead!!
